Maris Karjatse (1976) is an Estonian artist, translator and lecturer. She has studied Philology at Tallinn University (MA, 2002), Photography (BA, 2017) and Contemporary Art (MA, 2020) at the Estonian Academy of Arts. As a photography artist Karjatse has mostly been drawn to the relationship dynamic between a mother and a daughter, comfort objects, the process of recovery and working with raw material. Karjatse has had solo exhibitions in Draakon gallery (‘Mother’s Not Home’, 2018) and Hobusepea gallery (‘Meanwhile’, 2020 with Cloe Jancis). Her works have been shown part of several group exhibitions in Estonia. She has also written numerous accompaning texts and reviews for exhibitions. Karjatse is currently working at the Estonian Academy of Arts as the coordinator and lecturer at the Photography department and as the guest lecturer and the head of curriculum at the Contemporary Art Master programme Fine Arts department. Maris Karjatse is a member of the Estonian Union of Photography Artists since 2022.
